Boundaries in co-parenting are rules for how you communicate, not punishments. State them briefly. Enforce them by what you do next—not by lectures.
Not legal advice. Safety first: if you or the kids are in danger, contact local emergency services.
Boundary message examples
Kids as messengers
Please do not send messages to me through [Child]. Adult logistics stay between us in writing. I will not discuss adult issues with [Child].
After-hours / volume
For non-emergencies, I respond to co-parenting messages on weekdays between [hours]. For urgent child safety/health, call/text anytime and lead with “URGENT.”
One topic
I can discuss [topic] in this thread. Please keep other issues to a separate message so we can resolve one thing at a time for [Child].
Disengage from bait
I will not debate personal insults. When you have a logistics question about [Child], send the date/time/need and I will answer that.
Recording / third parties (neutral)
Please keep co-parenting logistics between us (or our agreed app). I will not discuss adult conflict with [Child] or use [Child] to carry messages.
Gray rock (use carefully)
“Gray rock” means boring, minimal responses so drama gets less oxygen. Use for bait—not for hiding real emergencies or required notices. Pair with parallel parenting when contact must stay low.
- Answer the ask only
- No sarcasm, no scorekeeping
- Stop when logistics are clear
Bait → boundary
They send
“You’re pathetic and everyone knows why we divorced. Answer me.”
You send
“If this is about [Child]’s schedule or health, send the specific question. I will not discuss personal attacks.”
