Boundaries

Step-parent & new partner messages

Protect the kids from adult drama when households change.

New partners and step-parents can trigger old wounds. Your job in text is still the same: kids’ needs, logistics, and boundaries—not a character trial of someone’s dating life.

Not legal advice. Safety concerns about anyone around the children should follow your order and professional guidance—not vague accusations in a rant.

Principles

  • Kids are not messengers or spies between homes
  • Ask for facts you need (who is supervising, travel companions) without insults
  • Don’t force bonding or trash the other household in front of the kids
  • If it’s about the order (introductions, overnight guests), stick to the written rule

Templates

Introduction timing

I plan to introduce [Child] to [name] on [date] during my possession, in a low-key way at [place]. No expectation that you interact. Please keep adult opinions about relationships off [Child]’s plate.

Request info (neutral)

For [Child]’s safety planning, please confirm who will be present during your [dates] possession overnight (names of adults in the home). Thank you.

Boundary: no badmouthing

Please do not discuss adult relationship issues with or in front of [Child]. If there is a logistics issue about the schedule, send it to me directly in writing.

Pickup involving a partner

For the [time] exchange at [location], [name] may be with me only to drive. The handoff is still between us as parents unless we agree otherwise in writing.

Jealousy spiral → boundary

Before

“Your new person is trash and if the kids meet them I’m going scorched earth.”

After

“Please keep adult relationship topics between us as parents, not through [Child]. If you have a specific safety concern, send the facts in writing and we can address them appropriately.”
